When you surf the net, the host company collects a bit of data. For instance, they will record your internet protocol address (a number), what browser you use, when you visited and how long you stayed. All pretty basic stuff. Google collects the same information. They will also look to see if you have Flash, because if you do, they will serve you some pretty nice looking ads.
As a surfer, you can turn off your cookies. The only possible problem for you might be logging in to internet accounts or joining bulletin boards or forums. Just try it out, and if it doesn't work, turn them back on.
