What Do Your Dreams Mean?

  "To sleep, perchance to dream..."

                                    Shakespeare

Dreams are truly the window to your soul.  But so often, we give only a moment's thought to our dream meanings before we head out for the day.  Tomorrow, allow yourself the time to stop and remember.  Think about what you dreamt and interpret it with our help.  What you learn about yourself through your dreams just may surprise you!

Dreams normally occur during REM sleep.  During this stage of sleep, your eyes can move rapidly, your heart beats faster and your respiration increases.  Parts of your body may twitch as well.  Your brain has increased activity, yet your muscles are somewhat "paralyzed."  Could this be to keep your body's racing brain activity from being carried out by the body?  Just imagine if you were dreaming of flying!  If you are an adult and have normal sleeping patterns, your REM sleep can take up to 25% of your sleeping time.

Do you find it hard to remember your dreams?  Keep a journal and pen right by your bed.  Then as soon as you wake, roll over and immediately jot down your dream.  Do this before you do anything else, or the dream may fade.  Try to remember writing the very moment you are awake.  It might take a few days before you are able to make this a habit.

If you don't remember the exact dream but have a "picture" in your head of a dream's moment, write that down.  Maybe you wake and see the image of a clock slowly fading away?  Write it down.  Or if you just have a remembrance of darkness, light - anything you can glean in those few waking seconds - make note of it.

After you have written down your dream's symbols, look through our dictionary to find the possible meaning of your dream.  Remember, there are many things one symbol can represent.  And the context of how you saw the symbol is important as well.

For instance, if you dream about climbing the stairs of a tower, you may be trying to reach a goal in life.  If the stairs are difficult to climb, it is possible someone or something is holding you from reaching your dream.  But if the tower is easy to climb, there is nothing stopping you from achieving your goal.

A dream dictionary isn't cut and dry - but rather, should be used as a tool to help you interpret what your dreams mean.   Happy Dreaming!
